Still a Child at Heart - Katie Power - ink

Description

There's a story behind this, so please read on.

First off, I grew up on Power Pack - learned to read on it, and now I read it to *my* daughter. Her favorite is Katie Power.

Secondly, read this article Contest - A "Fat" Female Superhero"

Part of the rules says: " I will also accept fan-art of existing female super-heroines drawn with more realistic proportions." - and hence my brain clicked on Katie.

Now mind you, You only get to see a grown up Katie twice - both times in the yellow "Energizer" costume. (once as a beautiful teenager, and another as a very large woman)

So while this doesn't quite fit what they're going for, they are the inspiration for it. More so, the article they are referencing. I didn't quite go fat (like the contest specifically says to) so much as I went in directions that would have probably gotten some of the same comments had I pitched it just like the guy pitched his batwoman pic. She's not super model thin, she's got freckles, her legs are pretty thick (i don't know much about dancing, but i know you need to have strong muscles for that!) and she's small chested...and her hair isn't long and flowing with a gentle wave.....

Thirdly - for those of you wondering the following question: "WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER OUTFIT?"

I got into Katie's mind. Sorta....this part is kinda hard to explain.

Katie starts off as Energizer, and she's most recognizable as such, but there was a time when she was Starstreak too, and I felt that Starstreak fits her better. As Energizer, she was always afraid she'd hurt someone and constantly thought she was a monster and hated being thought of "only as a weapon". But as Starstreak - that's more her speed (no pun intended. Honestly!)

In the color version, I plan on having her costume still be yellow. She says in the comics that its her favorite color - and its the symbol, more than the color, that is indicative of their powers - and Katie knows how to contact Elsewhere to make changes/fixes to the costume. So why not?

In fact, she may have started with just the color, but then a few other things hit her...

see, ( as I'm drawing her as young adult) most of the life she can remember (think about it, how much stuff before the age of 6 do you remember other than snippets that you can ONLY place because of another thing you remember?) she's always been a superhero, always been a part of the team. Katie's always been rather proud of being a superhero (though afraid of being a monster) and she never really had much of a childhood - certainly not as much as her brothers and sister got. So I figured that Katie would try to hold on to some of the childhood aspects she didn't get much of as long as she could.

Whats more childlike, then a child playing at being a superhero while wearing a cape? and one of her childish dreams, in admiration of fellow superhero Dagger, was to dance....hence the little skirt.

And she still wants to be part of the team, but at the same time, she's trying to push her own individuality - since she's ALWAYS been a part of the team.

And Katie is the type of person to just play around with the outfit (and her hair!) and not give a wit what anyone else thought of it. She's pretty strong minded and stubborn and if anyone could pull off anything so silly looking, She can!
